Case Studies

Top of the World Coffee

Top of the World Coffee operates in Katmandu and provides employment for village women in a safe clean working environment. The business recently imported the country's first coffee roaster and is expanding beyond food products like pizza and french fries with a marketing study under way for a full service coffee shop in the city.

The consortium of companies which meet together for self-improvement demonstrates the value of partnerships. Each month the group studies significant books and case studies and invites experts to address the group. Recently IBEC's Ken Leahy has taught on subjects such as Decision Making Styles, Relationship Marketing, and Fair Trade issues.

Congratulations to the consortium which celebrated five years in existence in May 2011. Companies represented in the partnership include business related to coffee, technology, travel, jewelry, media and electrical contracting.

Java Water Project

Water is a gigantic world issue today.  It is scarce in some areas and in many areas water is unsafe to drink. Clean water technologies are needed on most continents.  The country of Indonesia is no exception.

Community Restoration of Indonesia is attempting to provide potable water to eastern Java and the island of Bali in Indonesia.  Technologies include rain retention through building tanks, water filtration systems and hydraulic pumping stations.  It is a classic NGO effort to bring life-giving water and thus meet key health needs
 (www.crcindo.org)

IBEC Ventures has been retained to help provide the business expertise to help local efforts to become profitable and sustainable. NGO humanitarian efforts are not meant to serve in perpetuity and thus businesses which function locally in sustainable ways are the most desirable.

Is it possible to move from a humanitarian project dependent on external funds to a project totally self-sufficient in the local economy, creating jobs and marketing themselves to the local market place? IBEC Ventures consultants are providing the assessment, planning and financial expertise to make the transition.

Training in Kazakhstan

There are numerous opportunities in the booming country of Kazakhstan.  The challenge is to evaluate good ideas and provide competent research and counsel toward a business plan which has high potential of success in its implementation.

A team of seven IBEC Ventures consultants spent ten days on site, consulting with national and international business owners eager to be successful.  They provided about a dozen individualized consulting sessions leaving each with a business report of our observations, concerns and recommendations.  In some cases follow-up mentoring became part of the deliverables.

Consultants and trainers also provided seminars for middle managers in mentoring strategies and relationship marketing.  A day-long educational seminar provided professional development training for 60 paid attendees.  Topics included career planning, goal setting, emotional intelligence and mentoring.

In situations like this IBEC Ventures consultants “consult” but they also teach, mentor and engage individuals in values based business strategies with a view to 360 degree success.

Balkans Project

A team registered as an NGO in the Balkans decided to move into a values based business so as to create sustainable jobs and community value.  The challenge was to establish a free market opportunity in a former Soviet-style command economy with about 50% unemployment.

IBEC Ventures consultants were asked to help evaluate the opportunity, create a business plan and help implement a strategy. There emerged a clear need for food products in the region and a basic SWOT analysis qualified a business opportunity in the agricultural sector.   Consultants helped forge a business plan and financial projections.

A consultant provides mentorship in capital acquisition as basic equipment is purchased, prototype greenhouses are being evaluated and a micro-business potato project has proved successful.   There are challenges ahead but an agribusiness is well on its way.

Indonesian Boat Builders

An entrepreneurial client who knew boats but with little business experience wanted to buy an existing business.  He needed help navigating the legal and tax issues, evaluating the condition of the business, creating a business plan to estimate its potential,  and secure financing to cover acquisition and start-up costs.

IBEC Ventures consultants were tasked with determining if this was a viable business and with putting an overall plan together to address the major issues in a competitive time frame.  Using up-to-date communication technology we tapped into resources both in Indonesia and the USA.  We listened to cultural factors and made financial projections.

Our consultants delivered competent legal counsel and assistance with on-site inspection, business evaluation tools to create a business plan and we identified financial sources for capital.

The result was the acquisition of the company (Nusa Dua Boat Works) which serves the community with jobs, demonstrates principles aligned with important values and the free enterprise model.  One year later, they celebrated a year of building boats, creating jobs and growing a healthy business.

Project East Asia

A young entrepreneurial couple had started a light manufacturing and trading company in East Asia (XQ Manufacturing)  in a booming economy.  Their ideas for the export market seemed endless and his energy and enthusiasm had started to pay off with market success.  As with any growing company, they needed specialized consulting help.

IBEC Ventures was asked to address questions related to a less than robust business plan, cash flow issues, cost accounting problems, weakening market links, values integration and poor raw materials providers.  Two experienced business persons paid a visit, gained valuable understanding of the challenges and set about to mentor the business towards its values driven success.

The consultants worked through issues, made recommendations and provided mentoring for a couple of years.  The mentoring included advice on HR issues related to employer-employee relations, market loss in the USA market, and preparation for further capital acquisition.  Modern technology helped IBEC to  continue the consulting from the USA.

The business has expanded into new facilities, is staged to qualify for new capital loans, and is facing the challenges of the market place with renewed knowledge and purpose.
